TableOne Event!
On December 4, 2019, TableOne had their end of the year event. TableOne was one of TrueNorth's clients and is a nonprofit based out of Kenton, Ohio. Their motto? "TableOne. One Table, Everyone Eats." Their end of the year event is an event dedicated to their sponsors and other donors of TableOne—including a three course meal and a silent auction—each item dedicated by families, local small businesses and churches.
Upon arriving, the members of the local PRSSA which chose to help all were assigned tasks. These tasks included rolling silverware, food preparation and even drawing on the chalkboard. I bounced around from a few activities, from moving tables and arranging the silent auction to greeting individuals as they arrived. However, once the dinner started, I was assigned a task which I was doing until the night ended: dish washing.
The dish washing situation was as if I was transported four years back in time—when I was a dishwasher for a local Italian restaurant. During this time, I absolutely perfected the art of completely shutting my brain off and relying on my autopilot body to spray down dishes, run them through the dishwasher and put them away—all repeating while dishes began piling up over the course of three courses. The part of my brain which recoils touching wet food was completely disconnected from my current situation, digging bits of eaten food out of the drain so the soup that was the kitchen sink could actually drain. After almost all the dishes used throughout the dinner, I called it quits and took my now dried my sink-misted face and arms. While the previous article may seem like I'm complaining—I promise I'm not. I really did enjoy taking on TableOne as a client, between creating infographics and shooting video as well as attending the end of the year event, I felt as though my work had some meaningful impact, rather than assignments strictly within a class curriculum.
