Something Surreal out of the Earthly

If you happened to take the time out of your day to interact both with my blog and the video above, then I am positive you're asking at least some questions. What you just watched was the song "The Humming / The Ghost (feat. Maxime Barlag)" by Dutch artist Binkbeats. Before becoming a percussionist and producer, Frank Wienk (Binkbeats) had spent years studying the relationship between object and sound. Binkbeats first recieved internet recognition when his series Beats Unraveled appeared on YouTube channel Boiler Room. In this, he would take popular and well known beats by respected electronic artists and reconstruct them acoustically. Around this time, he began making his own sonically mystifying music. He uses a vast array of instruments and other such objects to create a musical wall that does all but encase the listener. As his website puts it, his goal is "to spawn something surreal out of the earthly." Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Binkbeats are his live performances where you see a true master at his craft. Using a looping pedal, an eclectic mix of unique, unknown instruments and even a few familiar ones, Binkbeats creates not only music, but an entire atmosphere. With everything that goes into the absolute wall of bliss, it is sometimes hard to remember that this is the work of one individual.

  1. Thank you for sharing your blog, thoughts, and video. It was very enlightening. The music isn't exactly my style but I thought it was really fascinating to listen to. I knew nothing about Binkbeats. I had never heard anything about him either so thank you for introducing a new artist to me! As a radio dj, that's unfamiliar territory for me!

  2. I'm so appreciative of people with talent like this. Being able to play a single instrument is a feat in my eyes, but to have a grasp on so many AND the hardware and software required to produce something like this is wild. Also, I really enjoy the sound. It's very chill, but a little bit haunting, which is perfect for spooky szn. Thanks for sharing this!

  3. This video is pretty fascinating and interesting. I've heard this kind of sonically song, but what this song is innovating is that the Binkbeats added the vocal part. Ususlly, this type of music do not come with the lyrics and voice, but he is very talented incorporating the vocal part, which is making the song more attractive.
