No Orifices
How often do many of us just kind of hope everything we're doing is alright and not a massive screw up? As much as I wish I could say that this is unlike me in every way, I find that I fit that short description more and more everyday. Thankfully, for both my sake and yours, our wondrous friend Guy Kawasaki has an entire chapter dedicated to avoid looking clueless. Although much of the chapter is completely and utterly pointless to someone that graduated in the same class as social media, it does have perhaps one of my favorite tips and tricks of the entirety of the guide. Tip 101. Don't Be an Orifice reads, "Edification is great. Sarcasm is great. Belligerence is lame. Denigration of other points of view is lame. Complaining that a post is not perfect for you is lame." I absolutely love this tip because people that assume the orifice role make me want to gouge my eyes out with some sort of barb. I hate orifices. The entitlement, the whininess, and the absolute disregard for both the person on the receiving end of the communication and the unfollow button.
Beyond complaints of orifices and other such unnecessary people, another obvious thing that I thought wouldn't have to be stated is Tip 103. Don't Buy Followers, Likes, or +1s. It seems like a lazy, unimportant way to look good on the outside, but nothing is truly achieved throughout the social media objective. Furthermore, people that buy followers are, like Guy says, are "cheating." Uphold live followers while upholding integrity.
