The Sights and Sounds of Pink Floyd

It's not too often I have a trip planned somewhere and some event just happens to be happening that same night. Surprisingly enough, Wish You Were Here, a Pink Floyd tribute, was performing in Columbus at the Newport Music Hall. What I went in with was an assumption I'd hear most of Floyd's popular music, perhaps see some pretty pyrotechnics and maybe even meet a few interesting people. What I was met with could only be described as an experience.

What was performed was not familiar, radio friendly Pink Floyd, but rather a glimpse into the psychedelia responsible for films like "The Wall" and other such accompanying material. After a brief intermission, the tribute band performed music from the concert and film "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii." It could only be described as mind bending and eclectic and very uncomfortable. However, like the original ensemble, I feel as though this was completely intended. Beyond just the music, I think many of the Floyd motifs were ever present, specifically in the tracks too deep for even myself.

All of this being said, the tickets were only around twenty dollars. After interacting with fellow concert goers as well as seeing the sheer age of the band members, I understood why. Much of the band were older as was much of the crowd—I was one of the only people under 40. All of that being said, I would without a doubt go and see them again. It made my brain physically exhausted but I feel like there was a lot that I did not pick up on that a second (or third or fourth) show would drag out. If you're into Pink Floyd or just really have nothing to do during a Saturday night, Wish You Were Here is a must see for anyone that'd call themselves a Pink Floyd fan.
